When it's our time to leave Tokyo one of the things I will miss most is hearing the 5:00pm "dinner bell." It's a beautiful chime that comes across the loudspeakers in our prefecture to let the school children know it's time to start heading home. Each area has their own "dinner bell."

It's one of my favorite sounds! We say "DINNER BELL" in our house when we hear it and the kids open up the sliding glass doors to listen. A friend's daughter (3 years old at the time) would say, "COCKTAIL TIME" when she heard the bell.
